Rev. Dr. Tom Sweets
I was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of a Christian businessman, inventor and entrepreneur, Martin Sweets. He was a good father, an excellent mentor and my best friend. After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduating with a B.A. in Religion, my first job was working at the Martin Sweets Company, which led the world in the development of polyurethane foam processing equipment.
From my college days, I considered whether God might be calling me into ministry and after two years working in manufacturing, I left the family business and entered a Master of Divinity program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Joan was 6 months pregnant with our first child, Tommy, when we moved to Topsfield, Massachusetts so I could attend seminary. With the help of Joan I served as the Senior High Minister for the Congregational Church of Topsfield.
After graduation, I accepted my first pastoral calling to the Ramah Presbyterian Church in Huntersville, North Carolina. Our second child, Henry, was a new born when we moved to North Carolina. We ministered for four and a half years at Ramah Presbyterian and in 1986 we moved just 20 minutes away to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina where we served for three years.
Following the three years at Westminster Presbyterian, we returned to our hometown of Louisville, where I took on the role as Executive Director for a non-profit ministry called the Friends of the Family. We directed several city wide outreach programs and provided opportunities for discipleship and evangelism to the local churches.
In 1996, we moved to Cincinnati, as I was called to be the Head of Staff at the Madeira Presbyterian Church. Joan worked in Covington, Kentucky as a speech therapist, Tommy headed off for college at the University of Virginia and Henry finished high school at Indian Hill. Tommy is now married to Gabrielle, living in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he is in an orthopedic surgery residency and Gabby teaches French. Henry has been a writer for newspapers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Cincinnati. He is also being trained in organic farming.
October of 2010 was the month when my wife Joan succumbed to cancer. This brought grief, not only to our home, but to the whole community. She was so dearly loved and deeply missed.
On June 12th, 2015 I married an amazing woman named Karen. Together we have a brand new blended family. Karen and I and her son Matthew are adjusting to this beautiful new chapter of life and have recently moved into our new home on Autumnwood Drive. We look forward to many wonderful years living in and serving this community!
I hope this brief biography helps you to get to know me. I look forward to meeting you.
